The Elections Commission has stated that vote boxes will be placed in neighbouring Sri Lanka and India for the local council election.

Elections Commission said the necessary permits and approvals to place vote boxes in both countries have been received. The President of the commission, Ahmed Shareef Adam said the vote boxes will be placed in Colombo, Sri Lanka and Trivandrum in India.

According to the Elections Commission, four vote boxes will be placed in Sri Lanka while one box will be placed in India. Although the commission made efforts to place vote boxes in the United Kingdom and Malaysia, the necessary approvals were not received from both the countries. Therefore, no vote boxes will be placed in either country, the commission has decided.

Shareef said sixteen officials are needed per vote box placed in Sri Lanka as those voting in Sri Lanka are registered for several different constituencies. However, only 47 officials could be arranged from Sri Lanka, and 17 officials will need to be sent to Sri Lanka from Maldives, said Shareef. While only three officials could be arranged from India, officials will be sent to India as well, said Shareef.

The council election is scheduled to take place on April 10.
