INDIA SETS WORLD RECORD WITH 79,000 FRESH CASES IN A SINGLE DAY

India registered nearly 79,000 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, the highest single-day surge reported by any country since the beginning of the pandemic.
The record single-day surge of 78,761 cases pushed India's total Covid-19 tally past the 35-lakh mark, just a week after it crossed the 30-lakh mark, with a record single-day spike of 78,761 cases, while recoveries surged to 27,13,933 today, according to Indian Health Ministry data.
The latest data came on a day when the Indian government announced a new set of measures in a bid to revive the Covid-19-hit economy by deciding to restart underground and over-ground metro train services in cities in a calibrated manner from September 7.
The total number of coronavirus cases stood at 35,42,733, while the death toll climbed to 63,498, with 948 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours, the data showed.
The recovery rate has increased to 76.61 percent, while the case fatality rate has further declined to 1.79 percent.
There are a total of 7,65,302 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country, which comprises 21.60 percent of the total caseload, the data stated.
